Divisions
for solo clarinet (2014)
Divisions is a short, five-minute piece for solo clarinet. The piece is basically in four sections. Section
one consists of rapid scalar passages, section two contains a two-note riff that is developed, section
three is lyrical and improvisatory, and section four combines motives from the previous three. The
title refers to the changes in mood and pace between the sections—changes that are eventually
dissolved as the sections are combined in the final part of the piece.
Divisions was written for Caitlin Beare in September 2014. Caitlin premiered the piece in January 2015 in New York City.
